Basildon Park (National Trust)                                      Wednesday 1 September 2021

Built in the late 18th century by Francis Sykes this lovely  Georgian mansion is surrounded by 400 acres of parkland and has been home to some notable families.  The interior still has a beautifully decorated hall, spectacular staircase and an arched first floor gallery with a large collection of 17th - 20th century paintings. Once the home of Lord and Lady Illiffe it played host to many glamorous parties in the 1950s.  More recently it has been used as one of the backdrops for ITV’s Downtown Abbey being the set for Grantham House.
