Restaurant La Matelote, Boulogne seafront
This Michelin-starred restaurant, on the seafront road in the coastal town of Boulogne, is best known for its fish and seafood. We go every year to enjoy its Saveurs de la Mer (Flavours of the Sea) menu. La Matelote is a family-owned restaurant and the owner/chef, Tony L’Estienne, has been there for over 30 years. As you might expect this is a more formal style of dining and the food is outstanding.
Our special gourmet trip to France begins when you board the coach. Warm pastries and Bucks Fizz are served while we are on our way to the Channel Tunnel. A glass of aperitif is served on arrival with canapes. This is then followed by an amuse bouche and four further courses, accompanied by specially selected white and red wines. The leisurely lunch is completed by coffee and generous petit fours.
There is normally time to visit the Auchan hypermarket nearby for those uniquely French items of shopping to take home. On the train back to Folkestone we serve a light supper of fresh French
bread with cheeses, pate and grapes.
