Sissinghurst Castle Gardens          National Trust

Monday 2 July

Weald of Kent

This Grade 1 listed garden, which once belonged to the writer and poet Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson, is among the most famous gardens in England.  Her exuberant cottage garden planting, with layers of colour and high scent, against his architectural planning of the ‘garden rooms’ brings a romantic quality akin to that in her writings. It is now looked after by a team of gardeners and many volunteers.  The estate as a whole offers space and variety to explore in addition to the  gardens.  There is a circular walk taking in the lakes and if you want see Vita’s personal writing room on the way up the Tower the views alone are also said to be worth the 78-step climb to the top. Walking on to see the working farm and vegetable garden you will be rewarded with sights of birds, butterflies and dragonflies amongst the carpet of wild flowers.  You can borrow a pair of binoculars from the hotel reception. When you are hungry you can find lunch in The Granary.
