J W Turner was one of Britain’s greatist artists.  He was mainly regarded as a landscape artist but his art tells us a lot about the modernising times that he lived through.  Turner lived and worked at the peak of the industrial evolution when steam replaced sail; machine power replaced man-power and political and social reforms transformed society.  Many artists ignored these changes but Turner faced up to the new challenges and this exhibition includes “The Fighting Temeraire” and “Rail, Steam & Speed”.  It shows how Turner became involved in political issues of the time, explores what it meant to be a modern artist in his lifetime and shows a new perspective on his work and life.
