Alsace is situated in Eastern France, on the border with Germany.  It is the smallest region of France and very pretty in its location between the Vosges mountains and the river Rhine.  Among the regions of France, Alsace has been particularly successful in preserving its original character and architectural heritage.  The region has some picturesque and attractive villages with streets of half-timbered houses overflowing with geraniums. Our hotel is in Obernai, a charming small town where the medieval streets of the old town are bordered with magnificent half-timbered houses which are overlooked by the twin towers of St Pierre & Paul church and belfry.  We will also be visiting Riquewihr, a village which is classified as one  of “the most beautiful villages in France.”  Riquewihr owes all of its beauty and history to another feature of Alsace and that is its wine.  Over the centuries the vineyards of Riquewihr and surrounding villages along the “Alsace Wine Route” have produced some of the best wines of Alsace.  We will have a wine tasting included in our tour and visit Ribeauville, another small town which has preserved its historical heritage dating back to the 14th century.  On the way to and from Alsace we will be staying overnight either in, or close to, Metz.  Metz lies at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers and has a rich 3,000 year history.  St Etienne Cathedral is well worth a visit.   It is one of the tallest Gothic buildings in Europe and has over 6,500 square metres of stained glass windows including some by Chagall.
